I'm sure most of you have seen such classic animated Disney movies as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio or Alice in Wonderland. As well as some of the more-recent-but-still-old ones like Lion King or Hercules. It seems most of the latest animated Disney releases use computer animated graphics, as opposed to being hand-drawn. I understand that things move on as technology develops, and computer animations are much less time consuming. But while some of the new movies are great, I can never appreciate them as much as the classics.
The beautifully hand rendered characters and especially the stunning backgrounds are just so amazing. It is definitely this appeal which draws me towards movies made by such companies as Studio Ghibli. They manage to continue the traditional art of animation in an increasingly technologically dominated market, and they are definitely successful in it. Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away is the 2nd highest-grossing film in Japanese history, not to mention all their other extremely successful animations.
So what do you think of the change in animated movies? Do you prefer computer generated or hand-drawn animations?
I miss classic animation, but CGI is relatively cheaper so it makes sense why they use it so much.
ReplyDeleteI also prefer the hand drawn animations, just something about it that I like.
ReplyDeleteClassic animation is awesome. One of the things I didn't like about the new Star Wars movies was that they are all really CGI heavy.
ReplyDeleteAnime, that's it
ReplyDeleteStarting to get real!
ReplyDeleteI think it's possible to mix the two, a seamless transition between drawn to cgi is brilliant in my opinion :) Has to be done well though. But i agree that those movies will never have the charm of the hand-drawn animations :)
ReplyDeleteas long as the story is good, i don't really care. :)
ReplyDeleteComputer animated for me maybe because I grew up on it. I dont have a huge attachment to the old disney stuff.
ReplyDeleteI love the older stuff. thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteanimation does look good, but i dont like anime.
ReplyDeleteI love anime! Good stuff.
ReplyDeleteclassic animation is better than anime
ReplyDeleteNice :))
ReplyDeleteSpirited Away is amazing, wanna go watch it now.
ReplyDeleteI agree man, cartoons are supposed to be cartoons. Not 3D animation.
ReplyDeleteBut, 3D animation is... pretty good too.
I love a good animated movie, but the original hand drawn always seem to hit a spot that super, overdone computer animations can't. I miss the old Disney style.
ReplyDeletepersonally i prefer computer generated animation as it was what i maninly watched during my childhood.
ReplyDeletethey each have their own style i guess
ReplyDeleteHow to Hack Life.
I agree with KuntaJay and everyone else, I do miss classic animation but 3D is just preferred, if you look at Disney's animation history.
ReplyDeleteGood Ol' Classic hand drawn cartoons.
ReplyDeleteMan this gives me a new appreciation for cartoons.
ReplyDeletelove the blog mmmm
ReplyDeleteI miss classic so much too
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Real animation is inherently better and will always be better.

When i was a child i kinda like it, but now look so old and creepy.
ReplyDeleteAll of my friends hated Spirited Away, but I kinda liked it.
ReplyDeletevote rubber figurines
ReplyDeleteI grew up with hand drawn animation, so I'm a little partial. But there's a certain unique charm that only comes from a hand drawn character.
ReplyDeleteThe new Winnie the Pooh coming out in a couple of months looks old school.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the cartoons of the future will look like.
ReplyDeleteGive the computer generated animations some time and they will look very good! But for now I also prefer hand-drawn stuff.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I miss the hand-drawn movies. The new stuff is sharp, don't get me wrong, but imperfections are beautiful in their own way.
ReplyDeleteSpirited Away is one of my top all time favorite movies. :) Computer generated animation can be pretty cool sometimes but nothing beats classic hand-drawn animation.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely computer animation
